WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

In this 3 hour zoom workshop, participants will leave with a greater understanding of the importance of math content strategies to improve instruction and a booklet with recommendations emphasizing those strategies with:

  • Specific examples of linkages to introduce solving equations
  • Specific simple, straight-forward examples to be used with initial instruction to build success on success
  • Specific scaffolding examples
  • Specific written strategies, procedures or formulas with an example to help students study
  • A sample unit test that is designed to set students up for success

Other math content strategies, such as using definitions, looking for patterns, comparing and contrasting, thinking out loud, using models, correct notation and the importance of decision-making when doing math, will also be addressed.

Additionally, this workshop will strongly suggest that rather than identifying a date to observe instruction based on a calendar, school administrators consider scheduling observations based on the introduction of new content they are familiar with so they are better able to address math content strategies in their formal and informal evaluations that result in improved math instruction and increased student achievement.
