Workshop Description:

In order to achieve your Student Learning Goals, you must be able to mandate and enforce appropriate student behavior in the classroom and at school in general so that structures, functions and procedures can be effectively implemented to increase student achievement gains and close achievement gaps. In this workshop, we will review the primary federal and state laws that govern student behavior and discipline in Nevada. This exploration of your legal rights and responsibilities is designed to assist you in maintaining a safe learning environment, which is a critical factor in achieving your Student Learning Goals that correlate to improved student achievement outcomes both inside the classroom and school-wide too.

U.S. Constitutional Search Requirements - what to do and what not to do

U.S Constitutional Due Process Requirements - how this relates to progressive discipline inside and outside of the classroom

Nevada Revised Statutes

  • General Provisions
  • Habitual Disciplinary Problem - definition and required actions by teachers and/or administrators
  • Suspension and Expulsion - from the classroom to the principal's office
  • Mandatory Expulsion - what can lead to this from the classroom to the principal's office?
  • Unlawful Acts - what this means to a classroom teacher and a school

Individuals with Disabilities Education Act - CRITICAL FOR ALL EDUCATORS

  • Manifestation Determination - what are the accommodations you must invoke?
  • Suspension Limitations - teacher and school requirements
  • Interim Alternative Placements - what does that look like for your classroom and/or school?

Intended Learning Outcomes for workshop participants are in alignment with NVDOE and National Standards for Professional Learning.

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will:

  • Increase their knowledge and understanding about federal and state law that governs student behavior that will enhance effective classroom management.
  • Become familiar with school -district policies regarding students’ rights to a safe, supportive, and respectful teaching and learning environment.
  • Self-reflect to identify the professional learning best practices that will enhance student learning and student growth in the teaching and learning environment.ALL are welcome, including anyone in a non-administrative position! NASA IS NOT A UNION. NASA is Nevada's PreK-12 Professional Development Organization for ALL Nevada Educators!

Participants will earn .5 credit (7.5 hours) toward license renewal!

This workshop ALSO counts for step advancement in Clark and most Nevada School Districts!

In CCSD, those in non-administrative licensed positions may count this workshop for license renewal AND ALSO 2.5 CUs - THOSE IN NON-ADMINISTRATIVE POSITIONS EARN BOTH!

(unlimited CUs in this category for those in non-administrative positions)

In CCSD, administrators and professional-technical administrators may count this workshop for license renewal OR 2.5 hours accrual toward step-advancement - not both for administrators.

(maximum of 30 hours per advancement cycle for administrators in this category)!

Washoe County participants will be required to also register for this course in "MyPGS" in order to receive in-service credit toward salary advancement.
