&

Former Coordinator of Clark County School District’s Math/Science Institute

Bill Hanlon, the former Director of the Southern Nevada Regional Professional Development Program, has been an educator for over thirty years. His educational experiences include teaching at the junior high, senior high, and college levels. He was the coordinator of Clark County School District’s Math/Science Institute and was responsible for K-12 math audits. He served on the Nevada State Board of Education, Regional Director of the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) and as a member of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) States Partnership Board. He hosted a television series on local PBS, “Algebra, you can do it!” and taught math at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, to prospective school teachers.

Bill’s knowledge of mathematics combined with his knowledge and insight of working with students living in poverty brings uniqueness to his brand of professional development in mathematics. Based on the foundation that students should feel comfortable in their knowledge and understanding of the mathematics, Bill has delivered one single, consistent message that he has continued to repeat over the years using his “6+1” strategies.

Bill is an author, Teaching Struggling Student in Mathematics, and Building Success on Success a consultant, speaker and provides professional development that supports teachers and administrators who work with struggling students in mathematics.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

This workshop is specially designed for superintendents, school administrators, curriculum specialists, school strategists, department heads, professional developers or anyone that has a role in supporting math teachers K-12.

Increasing math proficiency and achievement requires improved instruction.

Teacher evaluations typically emphasize “instructional” strategies – to improve math instruction greater emphasis must be placed on math content strategies.

This workshop will address your knowledge and understanding of math and will result in making specific recommendations to teachers that will improve instruction and result in increased student achievement and comfort levels learning mathematics.

Upon completion of the workshop, participants receive an extensive resource electronic booklet containing:

·  Instructional and assessment recommendations

·  Examples of linkages to introduce topics in familiar language so students are more comfortable in their learning

·  Specific simple, straight-forward examples to be used with initial instruction,

·  Repeated scaffolding examples to reach grade level expectations

·  Strategies on building in repetition struggling students and students living in poverty students need to be successful

·  Strategies to create tests that set students up for success not only on unit tests but also on high-stakes exams

·  Sample of unit test using test design
