THIS WORKSHOP IS FREE TO ANY EDUCATOR CURRENTLY WORKING IN A SCHOOL IN THE CITY OF NORTH LAS VEGAS (NLV)

*** NASA's foundation, The Silver State Education Foundation (SSEF), is in recipient of a grant from the City of North Las Vegas (NLV), which requires this workshop being offered FREE to any educator currently working in a school within the City of NLV

(school location listed at check out will be verified after registration)!***

$25 for Support Staff - Non-Licensed

$50 for NASA Members

$75 for Non-NASA Members

Due to Washoe County School District (WCSD) salary advancement requirements, WCSD participants will be asked to submit a brief written summation of how this professional learning event will transfer learning into practice before a certificate is issued. WCSD participants: please use the link provided on the Guidance/Link sheet for each event to submit. Jeanette Lee

Veteran Educator

Jeanette Lee is an esteemed educator with 28 years of experience in education with 19 years in the Clark County School District, currently teaching AP Literature and ninth-grade English. She holds master's degrees in educational leadership, instruction, and curriculum supervision. Jeanette is adept in classroom management, lesson planning, differentiated instruction, and integrating educational technology. Her expertise also extends to English Language Arts instruction and promoting writing skills across the curriculum. Fluent in American Sign Language, Jeanette is a strong advocate for deaf issues and inclusivity in education. Her contributions to professional development for educators and curriculum designers emphasize creating inclusive and effective learning environments.

Workshop Description:

This workshop will provide K-12 Educators with research-based strategies designed to develop skilled readers. Course content will include reading strategies and ways to promote vocabulary development through effective vocabulary instruction, and practical strategies in getting to the rigor of a difficult text.

In this virtual online workshop, participants will gain the knowledge and skills of the benefits of using research-based skills and strategies in reading which are necessary for optimal student success. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on current practices and disseminate research-based knowledge related to effective ways of comprehending informational and literary texts. The principles of how to teach rigorous text will also be discussed.

This professional development session aimed at K-12 teachers focusing on the integration and application of the Common Core Standards in English Language Arts, the following outcomes are designed to ensure educators are well-equipped to enhance student achievement through effective instruction and assessment strategies. The session will cover both literature and informational texts, with a focus on critical analysis, evidence-based argumentation, and integration of knowledge.

Learning Outcomes:

Understand and Apply Common Core Standards in ELA:

  • Teachers will gain a comprehensive understanding of the Common Core Standards for English Language Arts, focusing on key ideas, craft and structure, and integration of knowledge for grades K-12. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.2, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.1,
  • Participants will learn strategies for applying these standards in diverse classroom settings, ensuring all students can achieve mastery. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.2,

Differentiate Instruction to Meet Diverse Learner Needs:

  • Educators will develop skills to differentiate their instruction based on the diverse needs of students, incorporating strategies that address various learning styles, abilities, and literacy levels. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.3
  • The session will provide practical examples of differentiated instruction in reading comprehension, writing, and analysis of texts. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.4

Enhance Critical Thinking and Analytical Skills:

  • The session will include activities that promote questioning, analysis, and discussion of texts across grade levels.

Promote Collaborative Learning and Discussion:

Activity 1: Analyzing Textual Evidence

  • Description: Participants read closely to identify textual evidence for analysis and inferences.
  • Outcome: Understand and Apply Common Core Standards in ELA

Theme and Central Idea Exploration

  • Description: Group work to determine and analyze themes and central ideas in texts.
  • Outcome: Understand and Apply Common Core Standards in ELA
  • Related Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY. RL K.2, RL.1.2, RL.3.2 RL. 6.2RL.9-10.2

Activity 3: Character Analysis in Complex Texts

  • Description: Workshop on analyzing complex characters' development and roles.
  • Outcome: Enhance Critical Thinking and Analytical Skills

  • A brief session to reflect on the day's learning, discuss applications, and preview Day 2.

Activity 4: Understanding Figurative Language and Tone

  • Description: Exploration of word meanings and their impact on tone and meaning.

Activity 5: Analyzing Text Structure and Author Choices

  • Description: Analysis of structural choices and their effects on texts.

  • Related Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY. RL.K.5, RL. 1.5, RL.1.6, RL.3.3, RL.3.5, RL. 6.5 RL.RL.9-10.5

Activity 6: Exploring Cultural Perspectives in Literature

  • Description: Encouraging analysis of literature from diverse cultural perspectives.
  • Outcome: Understand and Apply Common Core Standards in ELA
  • Related Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY. RL.K. 2., RL,1.2,RL.1.5, RL.6.9,RL.9-10.6

Closing Session: Implementing Strategies and Next Steps

  • Description: A closing discussion on applying the strategies learned into classroom practice and exploring further professional development opportunities. These outcomes are designed to empower K-12 teachers with the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to effectively teach English Language Arts in alignment with the Common Core Standards, thereby improving student achievement and fostering a lifelong love of learning.

ALL are welcome, including anyone in a non-administrative position!

Participants will earn .5 credit (7.5 hours) toward license renewal!

This workshop ALSO counts for step advancement in Clark and most Nevada School Districts!

In CCSD, those in non-administrative licensed positions may count this workshop for license renewal AND ALSO 2.5 CUs - THOSE IN NON-ADMINISTRATIVE POSITIONS EARN BOTH!

(unlimited CUs in this category for those in non-administrative positions)

In CCSD, administrators and professional-technical administrators may count this workshop for license renewal OR 2.5 hours toward step-advancement - not both for administrators.

(maximum of 30 hours per advancement cycle for administrators in this category)!

CCSD licensed employees should be aware that professional development activities must be related to the educator/licensed professional’s assignment. CCSD teachers with any questions or concerns should reach out to the PGS Department at pgs@nv.ccsd.net

Washoe County participants will be required to also register for this course in "MyPGS" in order to receive in-service credit toward salary advancement.
