WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

Educational spaces play a crucial role in supporting LGBTQ+ youth. In Nevada, K-12 educational systems have a longstanding tradition of supporting LGBTQ+ students through policy. However, the key challenge lies in how administrators and educators can practically apply these policies to best support the diverse student bodies they serve. The answer lies in Universal Design for Learning (UDL).

UDL is a framework that anticipates and plans for diversity and variability in all its forms. By adopting UDL as the foundation for implementing LGBTQ+ policies, educators can more effectively support the diverse identities within their schools and classrooms. Join this workshop ready to collaborate and fully participate. Participants will leave the session with a self-authored action plan and numerous resources to help support LGBTQ+ youth in their settings.

Outcomes

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

  • Recognize the power educators and administrators have over LGBTQ+ student outcomes.
  • Understand the federal, state, and local policies that protect LGBTQ+ youth.
  • Make connections between the UDL framework and practical strategies to support LGBTQ+ youth in diverse K-12 settings.
  • Create a UDL-aligned action plan to implement policies and practices to support LGBTQ+ students.

ALL are welcome, including anyone in a non-administrative position!

NASA IS NOT A UNION. NASA is Nevada's PreK-12 Professional Development Organization for ALL Nevada Educators!
