THIS WORKSHOP IS FREE TO ANY EDUCATOR CURRENTLY WORKING IN A SCHOOL IN THE CITY OF NORTH LAS VEGAS (NLV) *** NASA is a recipient of a grant from the City of NLV, which requires this workshop being offered FREE to any educator currently working in a school within the City of NLV!*** It will be verified that the educators registering FREE are working in a NLV school prior to the workshop's start.

REGISTRATION COSTS:

$0 for Educators working in North Las Vegas Schools

$25 for Support Staff - Non-Licensed

$50 for NASA Members

$75 for Non-NASA Members

Due to Washoe County School District (WCSD) salary advancement requirements, WCSD participants will be asked to submit a brief written summation of how this professional learning event will transfer learning into practice before a certificate is issued. WCSD participants: please use the link provided on the Guidance/Link sheet for each event to submit. Lastly, when completing events that are (1) or more credits, please submit your tracker to the PGS Department in Washoe and to ahendersonnasa@gmail.com

Workshop Description:This workshop will provide K-12 educators with research-based strategies designed to develop skilled writers. This course will focus on narrative, persuasive/argument writing. Course content will address narrative and persuasive writing defined, organizational structure, ways to build an argument, elements of narrative writing, and poetry as vehicle for narrative writing.Learning Outcomes:Enhanced Understanding of Writing Genres: Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of narrative and persuasive/argumentative writing, opinion, enabling them to teach these genres more effectively to students .CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.W.1, CCSS.ELA-

LITERACY.CCRA.W.3Strategic Writing Development: Teachers will learn research-based strategies for developing skilled writers, focusing on creating coherent, well- structured narratives and persuasive texts that meet grade-level standards. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.W.4Organizational Structure Mastery: Educators will acquire techniques for teaching organizational structures in writing, helping students to build coherent arguments and narratives with a clear beginning, middle, and end.CCSS.ELA- LITERACY.CCRA.W.4Argumentation Skills: The course will equip teachers with methods to help students construct solid arguments supported by clear reasons and relevant evidence, aligning with CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.6.1, W.9-10.1, and W.11- 12.1. and anchor standards CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.W.1Narrative Writing Techniques: Teachers will explore elements of narrative writing, including practical techniques, well-chosen details, and well-structured event sequences in alignment with CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.W.1& CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.9-10.3.Precision in Language: Educators will learn to guide students using precise language and domain-specific vocabulary following CCSS.ELA- LITERACY.W.6.2.D. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.SL.1, CCSS.ELA- LITERACY .CCRA.SL.4Schedule:Argumentative

Writing Workshops Activity: Analyze examples of strong argumentative/opinion essays to identify effective elements. Related Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY. WK.1, W1.1, W3.1,W.6.1, W.9-10.1, W.11-12.1 Outcome: Skills to guide students in constructing well-supported arguments.Genre Exploration Sessions Activity: Examine characteristics of narrative and persuasive writing through interactive exploration. Related Standards: Supports understanding for CCSS.ELA- LITERACY W.K.3,W.1.3W.3.1.A, W.3.1B,W.9-10.3 (narrative writing). Outcome: Understanding of different writing genres to enhance teaching effectiveness.Argumentation Skill-Building Activity: Role-play and debate to practice argument construction. Related Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY. W1.1,W1.2 W.6.1, W.9- 10.1, W.11-12.1 Outcome: Methods to enhance student argumentation skills.Vocabulary and Precision in Language Seminars Activity: Seminar on precise language and domain-specific vocabulary. Related Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY. L.K.1.F, L.2.1, W.6.2.D L.9- 10.1 Outcome: Strategies for teaching precise word choice for clarity and impact. Related Standards: Supports principles within CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.

L.K.1.FW.6.4, W.6.2.D, L.9-10.1 Outcome: Guidance on producing clear and coherent writing.

Incorporating Poetry in Narrative Writing Activity: Use poetry to teach narrative elements and storytelling. Related Standards: Enhances narrative skills relevant to CCSS.ELA- LITERACY. W.1.3, W.3.3.B,W. 6.3.B,W.9-10.3 Outcome: Methods to blend poetic techniques with narrative writing.

Classroom Application Projects Activity: Plan and discuss implementation of writing projects in the classroom. Related Standards: Broad application across writing standards. W.1.4, W.6.4, W.8-10.1.4 Outcome: Application of writing strategies and observation of student impact.

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Discussions Activity: Discuss incorporating diverse perspectives in writing and creating an inclusive environment. Related Standards: Broad support for inclusive and equitable teaching practices. Outcome: Strategies for fostering an inclusive learning environment.

This detailed plan integrates CCSS alignment with each activity's description and outcomes, ensuring that educators are equipped to improve their instructional practices in alignment with key writing standards.

ALL are welcome, including anyone in a non-administrative position!

Participants will earn .5 credit (7.5 hours) toward license renewal!

This workshop ALSO counts for step advancement in Clark and most Nevada School Districts! & In CCSD, those in non-administrative licensed positions may count this workshop for license

renewal AND ALSO 2.5 CUs - THOSE IN NON-ADMINISTRATIVE POSITIONS EARN BOTH!

(unlimited CUs in this category for those in non-administrative positions)

In CCSD, administrators and professional-technical administrators may count this workshop for license renewal OR 2.5 hours toward step-advancement - not both for administrators.

(maximum of 30 hours per advancement cycle for administrators in this category)!

CCSD licensed employees should be aware that professional development activities must be related to the educator/licensed professional’s assignment. CCSD teachers with any questions or concerns should reach out to the PGS Department at pgs@nv.ccsd.net

Washoe County participants will be required to also register for this course in "MyPGS" in order to receive in-service credit toward salary advancement.
