Workshop Description:
Education is in a tailspin: Teachers and paraprofessionals are leaving classrooms in droves, and too few applicants for their jobs are in the pipeline. Student needs--academic, social, emotional--are more pronounced than ever. Our communities once heralded us as heroes, and now they want us scrutinized and micromanaged.
If we leaders don't begin to think, act, and message differently, the system we have worked in will continue to devolve, and soon our children will be taught exclusively by
computers.
Sounds bleak...because it is. But here is the good news: we can avert this disaster if we start to make proactive changes from within!
Key Takeaways & Outcomes:
All PreK-12 educators see and understand the daily challenge of braiding cognitively demanding instruction with the care and support of the whole student and by the end of the workshop, participants will have delved into strategies to implement positive and healthy mindsets, actions, and communication approaches that enhance student engagement and metacognitive skills. Regardless of the academic content, educators will be able to adapt the SEL frame for daily lessons.
Key Objectives:
Establish and analyze the current successes and shortcoming in K-12 education Explore ways to double-down on our strengths and address our weaknesses Discuss and apply mindsets, moves, and messages for improvement
Tangible Outcomes:
The most valuable outcomes will be an understanding of and ability to apply the information found in Parker's book (SEL); an awareness of what the research says about the state of K-12 education & ways to mitigate our challenges; the ability to generate and lean on mindsets, moves, and messages that will both buoy and improve us; and the formation of an action plan to implement at home.
