Elena Fabunan, a retired high school principal of the Clark County School District (CCSD), is a professional advocate for educational equity and student well-being. She has dedicated her career to serving all students, including immigrant newcomers facing unique challenges, with an unwavering commitment that stems from her personal belief in the transformative power of education.

Elena's deep commitment to trauma-informed practices in education has transformed the lives of countless students. Recognizing the significant impact of trauma on student learning and development, she has championed efforts to implement trauma-informed approaches in schools, equipping educators with the knowledge and skills to support students who have experienced adversity.

As a Lead MSEL Coach for Mindful SEAD, she has integrated trauma-informed principles into her coaching and mentorship, empowering school leaders to create safe and nurturing environments where all students can thrive.

In addition to her advocacy work, Elena serves on various educational organizations. As a board member of the Nevada Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents (NVALAS) and Vegas Vista Academy Charter School, she plays a pivotal role in shaping the organizations' strategic direction, instilling confidence in her ability to advance their missions of educational excellence and inclusivity.

Her dedication to empowering students and supporting educators is not just a job but a passion that has fostered positive change within the educational landscape. Her leadership, compassion, and dedication to those she has touched inspire a legacy of excellence in education that will endure for years.

Workshop Summary:

The workshop will cover essential topics such as understanding immigrant student trauma, trauma-informed practices in education, culturally responsive teaching, social-emotional learning, and strategies for academic support and achievement and strategies to close achievement gaps. Participants will engage in interactive discussions, activities, and reflection exercises designed to deepen their understanding and develop practical skills to better support immigrant students in their classrooms to improve their academic achievement. Participants will receive real-time immediate take-aways that can be implemented the next day in their classrooms and schools - ones that will yield positive academic outcomes not only for immigrant students, but for all students!

ALL are welcome, including anyone in a non-administrative position!

Participants will earn .5 credit (7.5 hours) toward license renewal!

This workshop ALSO counts for step advancement in Clark and most Nevada School Districts!

In CCSD, those in non-administrative licensed positions may count this workshop for license renewal AND ALSO 2.5 CUs - THOSE IN NON-ADMINISTRATIVE POSITIONS EARN BOTH!

(unlimited CUs in this category for those in non-administrative positions)

In CCSD, administrators and professional-technical administrators may count this workshop for license renewal OR 2.5 hours toward step-advancement - not both for administrators.

(maximum of 30 hours per advancement cycle for administrators in this category)!

Washoe County participants will be required to also register for this course in "MyPGS" in order to receive in-service credit toward salary advancement.

Washoe County School District (WCSD) participants are required to submit a 300-word essay on how they will implement this professional learning to increase student achievement before a certificate is issued.
