John McDonald
John is the Chief Operating Officer for the Council of School Safety Leadership (NCSSL), an innovative new program created by the Missouri School Board Association that supports K-12 school boards, executive leadership and school attorneys across the United States.
Prior to joining the National Council, John was the Executive Director of School Safety for Jeffco Public Schools in Colorado for 14 years and is recognized internationally as the architect of the Columbine High School post tragedy security and emergency management plan. Jeffco schools is a district of 86,000 students and 14, 000 employees at the foot of the Rockies in Colorado.
John has been recognized by the US Department of Education as a subject matter expert on active shooter preparedness, emergency plan development and school/law enforcement collaboration. Following the Sandy Hook tragedy, he was invited to the White House to speak about creating the model active shooter preparedness, response, and recovery program in K-12 schools communities.
During his time with Jeffco Schools, John led Jeffco’s crisis response to many emergencies and tragedies including; the Deer Creek Middle School shooting for which he was recognized as the School Safety Director of the Year, the kidnapping and murder of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway while on her way to school, the tragic death of a high school student who intentionally set himself on fire in front of more than 200 classmates and the successful rescue operation of 169 students and staff members in the mountains of Colorado trapped by a 500 year flood.
John has supported School Districts, School Boards and Superintendents around the country during or in the aftermath of tragedy including the 2013 Arapahoe High School shooting, the Scream Bandit bank robber shooting at Sheridan High School in 2015 and the 2018 school shooting tragedies in Parkland Florida and Santa Fe, Texas.
A former police officer in Westminster Colorado, and Sr. Manager of US Investigations for a Fortune 100 corporation, John holds two bachelor’s degrees and has been recognized by CBS News as a Community Game Changer for his work on the front lines, protecting kids and has collaborated on two FBI documentaries “Echo’s of Columbine” and “In the Aftermath”, and was highlighted on the Showtime documentary, Active Shooter, America under Fire.
In November of 2022, John was recognized with the prestigious ASTORS Homeland Security Award for excellence in public safety and community resilience.
Bryan Krause Bryan is an education visionary who has long understood the relationship between strong school safety programs and high-quality education. He holds a master’s degree in educational leadership and has been leading crisis mental health response and recovery efforts for school tragedies for the past 32 years.
As a principal of a high school that suffered a school shooting, he understands the life changing impact that happens when violence comes to school. A former teacher, coach, and district administrator, Krause’s passion for K-12 education always shines through. He provides hope to those who have experienced heartbreak; helping students, staff, and leaders through the most difficult of times.
Krause has responded to five school shootings in his career, provided the crisis mental health leadership following a student suicide by fire on campus, and led the mental health response for elementary students and staff following the kidnapping and homicide of a student. He has responded to hundreds of small and large crisis events that require mental health support, and each time, he does it with grace and kindness that allows students and educators the best opportunity for recovery.
Today Krause is a K-12 education strategist for CDW Education. He works with school districts across the U.S. in the implementation of strategic technology initiatives bringing 21st century school safety to 21st century learners.
ALL are welcome, including anyone in a non-administrative position! NASA IS NOT A UNION. NASA is Nevada's PreK-12 Professional Development Organization for ALL Nevada Educators! Participants will earn .5 credit (7.5 hours) toward license renewal!
This workshop ALSO counts for step advancement in Clark and most Nevada School Districts! & In CCSD, those in non-administrative licensed positions may count this workshop for license
renewal AND ALSO 2.5 CUs - THOSE IN NON-ADMINISTRATIVE POSITIONS EARN BOTH!
In CCSD, administrators and professional-technical administrators may count this workshop for license renewal OR 2.5 hours toward step-advancement - not both for administrators.
All participants earn license renewal credit by taking this event! Washoe County participants may receive salary advancement- please look in MyPGS 1-2 weeks after NASA posts this offering to see if inservice credits are offered.
If so, Washoe County School District (WCSD) participants are required to register in MyPGS and submit an artifact (which will be specified) on how they will implement this professional learning to increase student achievement before a certificate is issued.
