Workshop Description:

And how does it equip students to become lifelong proficient readers?

With research from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) indicating that 4th, 8th, and 12th-grade reading scores are once again abysmally low, particularly among disadvantaged students, it’s time to reflect on our teaching practices to evaluate how to support these learning gaps.

In The Science of Reading Workshop, we unpack research-based instructional practices that incorporate multiple components of literacy including word recognition, orthographic mapping, phonics decoding, and language comprehension. We package these practices in lessons that we model for you so you can see in real time how to apply scientific reading instruction in your classroom.

When we bridge the gap between research and reading instruction, we are better equipped to:

Nurture cognitive processes that are critical for successful reading acquisition.

When we engage with relevant scientific and neurological research about the development of reading skills and language acquisition, we are better able to design instruction that supports how the brain learns.

Identify learning gaps to modify instruction.

When we understand how proficient reading develops and why some readers have difficulty and others don’t, we’re better equipped to meet individual learning needs.

Provide opportunities for skill development across content areas

Supporting the lateral skills in reading and comprehension creates a large impact on our students’ ability to achieve and master skills in the classroom.

Promote the reading strengths and skills of ALL students

Understanding how reading is developed as a skill helps educators determine how to support student progress.

In this 4-part virtual- live workshop, you and your staff will learn:

Implement Evidence-Based Instructional Tools

Learn how to plan literacy instruction by incorporating multiple reading components including letter knowledge, orthographic mapping, and structured literacy.

Pair Scientific Research with Engaging Instructional Strategies

We’ll guide you through the use of word recognition and language comprehension to support reading comprehension and development.

Build Data-Driven Lessons & Assessments

We’ll step you through how to use the provided resource library to plan activities that show mastery of skills and inform reading instruction.
